Duke of Edinburgh Award

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award gives pupils the opportunity to challenge themselves, develop new skills and make a positive contribution to their community. Benton Park School offers the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, enabling pupils to progress through each level and build their confidence, independence and resilience.

The programme includes four key areas:

  • Volunteering: making a positive difference to other people or the community
  • Physical: improving fitness and physical wellbeing
  • Skills: developing a new interest or improving an existing skill
  • Expedition: planning, preparing for and completing an outdoor journey as part of a team

At Gold level, pupils also complete a residential experience.

Completing a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award requires commitment, organisation and perseverance. Pupils set personal goals, take responsibility for their progress and work collaboratively with others. The experience helps them develop qualities valued by colleges, universities and employers, including teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and effective communication.

The Bronze Award is launched when pupils are in Year 10. The programme begins with an information evening led by Mrs Whittel, Benton Park School’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Co-ordinator. Invitations and further information are shared with pupils and families before the event.
