Check In, Check Out

Together We Belong, Develop Character and Achieve Excellence

Check In, Check Out is a distinctive part of life at Benton Park School. Taking place throughout the week, it provides a structured programme that supports attendance, personal development, reading, enrichment, rewards and character education.

It is designed to help pupils start each week positively, develop important life skills, celebrate success and reflect on their progress. Through Check In, Check Out, pupils develop the habits, attitudes and personal qualities that support success both in school and beyond.

Check In

Pupils take part in Check In with their tutor four mornings each week.

These sessions help pupils begin the day prepared, organised and ready to learn. Alongside important school information and attendance updates, pupils take part in a carefully planned programme that supports their personal development and wellbeing.

Throughout the year, pupils explore themes such as:

  • Wellbeing and mental health
  • Self-worth and confidence
  • Empathy and kindness
  • Goal-setting and personal growth
  • Future aspirations
  • Character development
  • Healthy lifestyles
  • Relationships and social skills
  • Organisation and independence

Activities encourage discussion, reflection and active participation, helping pupils develop confidence, resilience and responsibility whilst building a greater understanding of themselves and others.

Attendance is also a key feature of Check In. Pupils regularly review attendance and punctuality, celebrate success and understand the importance of being present in school every day.

Check Out

At the end of each week, pupils take part in Check Out.

Check Out provides an opportunity to look back on the week and celebrate achievement across the school community. Pupils recognise personal successes, attendance improvements, positive contributions and examples of pupils demonstrating our values.

These sessions help pupils to:

  • Celebrate achievement
  • Reflect on personal progress
  • Recognise effort and commitment
  • Value positive behaviour
  • Set goals for continued improvement
  • Take pride in their contributions to school life

By celebrating success regularly, we reinforce the behaviours and attitudes that help pupils thrive.

Enrichment and Wider Opportunities

Check In, Check Out also plays an important role in promoting our Enrichment Challenge.

Pupils regularly discuss and record the activities they have completed both in and beyond school. This encourages pupils to engage fully with the wider life of Benton Park and develop experiences that contribute to their character and personal growth.

Opportunities are organised around five key areas:

  • Civic Engagement
  • Arts and Culture
  • Nature and Adventure
  • Sport
  • Life Skills

From volunteering and leadership opportunities to sport, creative arts, educational visits and community projects, pupils are encouraged to broaden their experiences and challenge themselves beyond the classroom.

Developing Character

Our vision is to ensure that pupils belong, develop character and achieve excellence.

Check In, Check Out is an important vehicle for delivering this vision. Through regular reflection, discussion and celebration, pupils develop the qualities that will help them succeed throughout their lives.

In particular, the programme actively promotes our school values of:

Kindness

Understanding others, showing empathy and contributing positively to the school community.

Resilience

Developing confidence, overcoming challenges and learning from setbacks.

Responsibility

Taking ownership of attendance, learning, behaviour and future aspirations.

By combining personal development, attendance, enrichment and recognition, Check In, Check Out helps pupils become confident, responsible and well-rounded young people who are ready to make the most of every opportunity.
