Business Studies

Business Studies at Benton Park School

Business is a popular option subject at Benton Park School. It gives pupils a valuable understanding of the world around them and the decisions that shape businesses, workplaces and everyday life.

The curriculum develops pupils’ knowledge of how businesses are created, managed and grown. Pupils explore where business ideas come from, how organisations identify and respond to customer needs, and how entrepreneurs secure finance and manage money. They also examine how larger businesses grow, compete and respond to changes in society, technology and the economy.

Lessons encourage pupils to think critically, solve problems and make well-reasoned decisions. They consider the opportunities and challenges faced by real businesses and learn to apply their knowledge to different contexts. Discussion, case studies, calculations and extended writing help pupils develop both their business understanding and their ability to communicate effectively.

Knowledge is carefully sequenced so that pupils build secure foundations before applying them to increasingly complex business situations. Assessment, feedback and classroom discussion help pupils identify misconceptions, strengthen their understanding and improve the quality of their analysis and evaluation.

Business offers something for everyone, whether pupils enjoy problem-solving, creative thinking, working with numbers or considering how organisations make decisions. It is particularly valuable for aspiring entrepreneurs, but also provides a strong foundation for pupils who want to understand how organisations operate.

Pupils leave Business with greater financial awareness, stronger decision-making skills and a clearer understanding of the working world. The subject prepares them for further study, apprenticeships, employment and the challenges of making informed decisions in adult life.

How our Business Studies curriculum is designed

An ambitious and inclusive Business curriculum

Powerful knowledge and business understanding

Pupils develop secure knowledge of the concepts, vocabulary and principles that help them understand how businesses operate. They study entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, operations, human resources and the external influences that affect business activity.

A carefully sequenced learning journey

Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build secure foundations before applying their knowledge to more complex business situations. At GCSE, pupils begin by exploring how and why businesses are established before examining how organisations grow and make decisions. At A-Level, pupils develop a deeper understanding of marketing, people, finance, strategy and global business.

Clear and ambitious end points

Each stage of the curriculum is planned towards clear end points that set out what pupils should know, understand and be able to do. As pupils progress, they interpret information with greater accuracy, apply business concepts to unfamiliar situations and make increasingly well-supported judgements.

Knowledge, practice and application

Pupils regularly revisit and apply their learning through case studies, business scenarios, financial calculations, discussion and extended writing. They learn to select relevant information, analyse business decisions and evaluate the likely consequences for different organisations and groups.

Reading, talk and business vocabulary

Pupils learn to use subject-specific vocabulary accurately when discussing and writing about business. They read and interpret case studies, financial information and business evidence before communicating their conclusions clearly and supporting them with appropriate reasoning.

Assessment that supports improvement

Assessment is linked to the intended curriculum end points. Teachers use questioning, discussion, classwork, financial calculations and written responses to identify what pupils know, what they can apply and what they need to improve. Feedback helps pupils address misconceptions and strengthen their application, analysis and evaluation.

Ambitious and accessible for all

The curriculum is ambitious for every pupil. Teaching is carefully explained, modelled and scaffolded to remove barriers while maintaining high expectations. Pupils are supported to develop confidence with business vocabulary, numerical information, case studies and extended written responses.

The impact of the curriculum

Over time, pupils become increasingly knowledgeable, confident and analytical. They can explain how businesses operate, interpret financial and non-financial information, assess different courses of action and reach well-supported conclusions. The curriculum prepares pupils for further study, apprenticeships and employment while developing financial literacy, critical thinking and informed decision-making.
