I work locally at a busy Doctors Surgery. I am a mum of two young adults and joined Benton Park as a Parent Governor in 2008 when I had a son at school, I have recently become a co-opted governor and started a new 4 year term. I have over 15 years experience of being a school governor as I am Vice Chair at a local Bradford primary school as well as holding the position of Chair of Governors at Benton Park. As a governor I enjoy the experience of continuing to learn as an adult and the involvement in nurturing others pathways in the ever changing world of education.
Julian Clough - Vice Chair of Governors
I am a Parent Governor at Benton Park, Vice Chair of Governors and Link Governor for Key Stage 4. My background is in Financial Services, having worked for Barclays and both the Skipton and Yorkshire Building Society Groups for a period of over 30 years. My career has primarily focused on developing effective and controlled Operational Management practices and teams and I therefore bring experience of financial, people and performance management to my role at Benton Park School. I have a keen interest in ensuring our children are effectively prepared and equipped for the challenges of life after school and that what they learn at Benton Park School provides the knowledge and skills needed to make the most of their future careers.
I am a qualified mechanical engineer with 20 years experience in industry. I currently run an electrical and mechanical service business as well as sitting on 3 boards as a Director. I have been a Governor at Benton Park since 2010 with children at the school. I have lived in Rawdon for most of my life and attended both Benton Park and Littlemoor schools as a child.
... a former leader in secondary schools, now a recently retired School Improvement Adviser, splitting time between governor duties, independent work which includes carrying out whole school reviews, advising on head teacher performance management and head teacher recruitment and leisure time! I am a governor in a primary and secondary school in Leeds and Chair of Governors at an Academy in Bradford. I have seen Benton Park go from strength to strength under dynaic leadership and I am proud to be a governor here.
I am a parent and a teacher and have been a university lecturer and international athlete in the past. During my time as a governor I have been on the Personnel and Standards sub-committees and have been the link governor for science, Sixth Form and careers, as well as my current responsibility for Safeguarding. These experiences have given me an overview of the link between strong enthusiastic teaching staff and pupil success, and what can be put in place to support staff or pupils who are struggling. I have also seen how the roles of teaching and other staff in school must be reviewed and restructured when necessary. As a teacher, I work with small groups or individuals who are working well below the expected standards and I am experienced in helping children find ways to overcome barriers to their learning. In my work I need to assess children before and after interventions and am familiar with the challenges some children face in their domestic lives and the major role that school plays in overcoming these.
I am the father of one child who started in year 7 and is now studying A'Levels in the Sixth Form. I became a parent governor five years ago and have also been a parent and local authority governor at a Bradford Primary since my son started his education. My background is over two decades in the software industry working for large internationals. In 2007 I qualified as a teacher and now work for an independent school teaching GCSE and GCE Computer Science. In 2016 I qualified as a CAS Master Teacher. My current hobbies include robotics and BBC:micro:bit programming. I'm a volunteer mentor for Exa Education code club for children.
I am a chartered architect and have been employed in the private sector for almost 25 years. Being the Managing Director of relatively small and medium sized companies I believe I have a range of transferable skills that can assist in my role of Governor and "critical friend". These include Human Resources, Marketing and Performance Management in addition to detailed property ansd estate advise. I have been governor at Benton Park School for over 4 years.
I attended Benton Park as a pupil so have a long history with the school. I have been a governor here since 2010/11, and before that I was on the governing body of a number of other schools across the ward and in Roundhay. I am a Leeds City Councillor for Guiseley and Rawdon ward, and as a result I regularly deal with casework that affects children and young people. I also use my knowledge of the council’s structures and decision-making processes to answer residents’ questions and find solutions to problems they are experiencing. I hope to use this knowledge and experience to help the school find practical solutions to any concerns, particularly in its dealings with the council itself. With my experience sitting on a number of council scrutiny committees over the years and as the current chair of the outer North West community committee, I am capable of acting as a ‘critical friend’ and have experience of holding officers to account. I run a landscape gardening company and have used this experience to provide guidance and advice to the school about buildings and grounds maintenance issues.
I served as a local Authority Governor at Benton Park for eight years and in 2013 was co-opted by the Board of Governors to serve a further four years. During my time as a Governor I have been chair of the Premises and Finance Committee. I am a Building Surveyor with over 30 years’ experience in dealing with buildings, management and finance. I spent seven years as a Director on a Local Authority housing management organisation during which time I chaired the capital programme committee. Being a Governor can be demanding at times, but it is both interesting and rewarding and I believe with my experience I have much to contribute to the running and future development of the school. I spent some time as a part time lecturer at the Leeds College of Building teaching carpentry and joinery and can appreciate some of the pressures our teachers have to face.
Karen Garvie - Staff Governor

I have additionally worked with leaders in Yorkshire schools. I took up the role of Staff Governor in December 2014. I am undertaking online governor training to develop my skills in supporting the school.
I am a parent governor at Benton Park and have 3 children; 2 currently at Benton Park and a third joining in 2018.
