SITE NEWS Unlike the last few years, there are no major building developments planned at present. However, we are not standing still and it is hoped to carry out refurbishment in a number of areas. The main priority is our sixth form block, which was originally constructed in the early 70s and is now showing its age. We hope to give the block a major facelift by replacing the existing windows and cladding with glass curtain walling. This will continue the theme set by the Student Support Centre and the two new sixth form teaching rooms. In the longer term we are drawing up plans to refurbish the male/female changing facilities in the gym area, and also to create a new ‘Fitness Room’. One of our major concerns in school is energy costs, which over the last few years have risen considerably. In a school that was originally constructed in the 60s, with single glazing, poor insulation and a now outdated heating system, it is not easy to reduce energy usage. However, we have been working with the Leeds Energy Unit and, following recommendations from them, we do hope to see a significant reduction in costs this year – watch this space! On a similar theme we have, from 1 April, started to recycle our waste paper and cardboard. This has been made possible by changing our waste removal contractor and hopefully, apart from the obvious ‘green’ benefits, it will reduce our annual costs also. If you have any questions about these or other issues to do with the site or buildings, please contact Geoff Scott on the school number or through the school’s email. |
