Before the mop up could begin, the school site team had to clear the hall of tables and chairs as this was in the middle of the main GCSE exam period and the hall had been set up for that day’s exams.
Over a period of about two weeks, a large number of fans and de-humidifiers were left to run continuously in an attempt to “dry out” the wooden floor. Regular moisture readings were taken to record the level of moisture in the timber, however, Leeds City Council Loss Adjusters decided that the floor was beyond repair and Yorkshire Water agreed to meet the full replacement costs.
It has been agreed to place the old surface with a new Synthetic floor (Uniturf). We visited sites where the Uniturf is in use to assess its suitability. E.g. Yorkshire County Cricket Indoor School and Gateways School. This type of floor is recognised and recommended by many National Sports Governing bodies. It will provide a long term solution with very little maintenance issues.
The new floor, which is manufactured in Canada, is due to be fitted week beginning 21st September and the Sports Hall should be back to full use the following week.
