Instructions and Advice to Examination Candidates

1. You must be in full school uniform for all examinations.

2. You should provide yourself with all the necessary writing and drawing instruments (pens, pencils, ruler, eraser, compass, protractor etc.) as directed by your subject teacher in a clear pencil case.

3. You must be at the examination room 15 minutes before the official starting time.  Examinations start at 9.00am and 1.30pm. Exam clashes have been resolved and candidates informed of the arrangements.

4. Outside the examination room there will be a copy of the 'Notice to Candidates' and there will be a seating plan.  On your desk will be a place card showing your name and candidate number.  Do not draw or write on this card.

5. Candidates are forbidden to have mobile phones in their possession during an exam.  Leave all mobile phones & mp3 players in the Changing Room or at home.

6. You are allowed to bring a small bottle of water into the exam, but it must be in a clear ‘sports top’ style plastic bottle with the label removed.

7. Anyone caught WRITING OR DRAWING ON THE EXAM DESKS WILL BE SEVERELY DEALT WITH and expected to clean it and any other desks which need cleaning.

8. An examination is deemed to be in progress from the time candidates enter the room until all the scripts have been collected.  Talking is permitted only with the invigilator.  Candidates are forbidden to communicate in any way with, seek assistance from or give assistance to another candidate whilst they are in the examination room.

9. No candidate will be permitted to leave the examination room until the official end of the examination. (No candidate may leave school before 10 a.m. for any morning exam or before 2.30 p.m. for any afternoon exam regardless of the length of the exam.)

10. If you feel unwell, raise your hand and attract the attention of an Invigilator.  Visits to the toilet will only be allowed in extreme circumstances.

11. Remember that normal lessons are going on around school for the majority of other Year Groups.  When you have finished your exam PLEASE LEAVE SCHOOL QUIETLY.

12    If for any reason you are unable to come into school for an exam a parent must contact school before 8.30am and notify us.

13    Answering

  1. You must not start to write until you are given permission to do so.  You will be given time at the beginning of the examination to fill in your name, candidate number and other details as required.
  2. Answers must be written in black ink (ball point/nib/fibre tip pens are all permitted).  Coloured pencils and inks may be used only on maps and diagrams only.
  3. Candidates may use a pencil eraser but Tippex (or other correcting fluid) must not be used.
  4. All work must be done in the answer book or on supplementary sheets.  All rough work must be handed in.  No paper is to be taken from the examination room.
  5. Supplementary sheets must be fastened to the back of your answer book. The invigilator will supply a treasury tag.

14.   Electronic calculators may be used for all examinations unless you receive specific instructions prohibiting their use.  Please note the following:

  1. The working condition of the calculator is the responsibility of the candidate. A fault in the calculator will not be considered as justifying special consideration for the user.
  2. No candidate may share or borrow the calculator of another candidate once an examination is in progress.
  3. Programmable calculators may be used but information and/or programs stored in the calculator's memory must be cleared before the examination begins.
  4. Calculator instruction leaflets and similar materials must not be in the possession of candidates during an examination.

15. At the end of the examination you must sit in silence until all the scripts have been collected.  You will then be given permission to leave.  Leave the examination room in silence.  Avoid making any noise until you are clear of the examination area.

Examination Board Instructions:
Candidates must not distract, disturb or communicate in any way with another candidate.  A candidate whose conduct interferes with the work of other candidates will be expelled from the examination room.  This may lead to the disqualification of the candidate in all examinations.

Re-mark service
The exam boards operate a re-mark service for candidates who feel that their mark for a particular paper was significantly below what was expected.  Marks can go up, stay the same or go down as a result of a re-mark. A re-mark for a single GCSE or A Level unit costs around £30 each.  The absolute deadline for enquiries about results is mid September.  See Mrs Barras for further details as necessary.
