Food

Family Meals

You will design and make a range of food products that would appeal to yourself and your family that would be suitable to be served as part of a meal. These food products will reflect the diverse cultures found in our society today.

You will learn about:

  • Health and Safety
  • Healthy eating
  • Using equipment
  • Food labelling
  • Cultural foods
  • Using standard components
  • Sensory Analysis

Textiles

Cultural cushion cover

Here we research different cultures and create stencils and transfers using CAD/CAM. These images are developed and adapted by the pupils and used to decorate fabric. After the sewing machine driving test is complete the pupils use the fabric to assemble a cushion cover.

Resistant Materials

Plant Pot Holder

You will design and make a plant pot hold for use outdoors. The plant pot holder will be manufactured using mild steel, and formed using a range of different bending jigs. Once you have formed all the pieces of your plant pot holder, you will join them together brazing equipment. The final stage will be to paint your work in order to give it a quality, waterproof finish.

Resistant Materials

Pencil/Mobile Phone Holder

You will design and model a selection of pencil / phone holders. Once you have modelled a suitable design in card, you will have the opportunity to make it using acrylic plastics. The manufacturing process will include the use of a scroll saw, coping saw, drill and line bending machine.

‘Meal Deal’

Food Technologists come up with new ideas for food products all the time. They either adapt exisiting products or create new ideas. Your challenge is to design and make a new ‘Meal Deal’ product. It must encourage people to eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day and be healthier than existing products. You will learn how to:

  • Analyse a design brief
  • Carry out research
  • Set design criteria
  • Carry out product analysis
  • Plan for production
  • Nutritionally analyse food products
  • Package products including environmental issues

Textiles

Children’s learning panel

Building on previous knowledge pupil’s use CAD/CAM, sewing machines, hand embroidery and activity components in order to design and assemble a children’s learning panel.

Resistant Materials

Mechanical Toy

You will design and make a mechanical toy using pine. You will gain knowledge of both mechanisms and working with softwoods. Creative thinking will be encouraged as you set about designing your own unique mechanism and theme.
