Science week 2007: Death stalks Benton Park corridors during Science Week Benton Park ’s annual science week featured a simulated epidemic, which soon became a pandemic, where pupils who caught the disease (when given a card by an infected person) had to be tested to see if they lived or died. The aim of the week was for students to gain a greater understanding of the effects that such a disease would cause in a close community such as a school. Also key stage 3 students spent there science lessons during the week carrying out a series of investigations to track the cause of the infection and found it to be lab tap water. The whole week proved a great success as the students really entered into the spirit of the week and from starting with one teacher on Monday morning, by the end of week 650 pupils and teachers had been infected. Of these, 300 died! Those who died were invited to buy death badges and the money raised went to our partner school in South Africa , Meetseshehla Secondary School , for science equipment. More than 6500 Rand was raised for the school.
Year 8 “Feel the Force” at Alton Towers In April a group of 31 gifted and talented year 8 pupils went to Alton towers to the “feel the force” event. As Sam Redhead explains “The day started with a science presentation about how all of the rides work by using forces. First of all the presenter showed us how the big swinging boat worked. The theory was that without the extra power rotating it up and down it would never stay going at the same height because the force slows down like a pendulum near the bottom. He demonstrated this by getting a person out of the audience and holding a balloon on a pendulum string to his nose he then let go of it and when it came back to his nose it didn’t touch him. As well as the presentation which was great we could then relate to how it works on the ride but at some points we forgot all about it because of the shock of the ride. It was a fun day and all of us in set 1 would like to thank all who allowed the trip to go ahead.” The group of pupils also attended a series of follow up classes on their return to school and put some of their new found skills to practise. Year 6 Forensic Science Day Once again we welcomed a group of 50 pupils from Rawdon St Peters School to come and sample the delights of that Benton Park Science department has to offer. The group of pupils spent the morning conducting a series of practical to try and decide who had stolen Mrs Clarke’s vase and were able to get a taste for the spent of equipment and skills they would be using in secondary school science. As can be seen from the work and pictures below great fun was had by all and we now look forward to continuing our work with our feeder primary schools through a programme of science enrichment activities on a Thursday afternoon. |
