Year 8 “Feel the Force” at Alton Towers

In April a group of 31 gifted and talented year 8 pupils went to Alton towers to the “feel the force” event. As Sam Redhead explains “The day started with a science presentation about how all of the rides work by using forces. First of all the presenter showed us how the big swinging boat worked. The theory was that without the extra power rotating it up and down it would never stay going at the same height because the force slows down like a pendulum near the bottom. He demonstrated this by getting a person out of the audience and holding a balloon on a pendulum string to his nose he then let go of it and when it came back to his nose it didn’t touch him. As well as the presentation which was great we could then relate to how it works on the ride but at some points we forgot all about it because of the shock of the ride. It was a fun day and all of us in set 1 would like to thank all who allowed the trip to go ahead.”

The group of pupils also attended a series of follow up classes on their return to school and put some of their new found skills to practise.
