GCSE P.E COURSE The course provides candidates with an opportunity to study both the practical and theoretical aspects of Physical Education. The knowledge gained should enable candidates to develop an understanding of effective and safe performance in Physical Education. The syllabus we are following at present is Edexcel 1825 full course. The theory component has a single 1 hour 45 minute terminal examination and makes up 40% of the course. The theoretical aspects of the course cover three main subject areas, a) Factors affecting participation and performance b) Safety Aspects and Risk Assessment in Physical Activity and Sport c) Applied Anatomy and Physiology The practical component is continually assessed and makes up the remaining 60%. On the practical side, students have to choose four activities from at least two areas (see below). 25% Coursework 25% Final practical assessment 10% Analysis of Performance Students who wish to further their progress in GCSE PE would be advised to make sure they fully involve themselves within the life of the PE department by:
ANALYSIS OF PERFORMANCE
You will be examined on your ability to 1. Analyse your own and others performance. 2. Plan methods to improve performance, showing awareness of rules, safety and tactics, in ONE activity which you may choose from any of the practical activities you offer for the coursework.
During the course you will be able to practice all your activities and may choose the best one near the end of the course.
You may be required to perform and analysis of performance on the final moderation day. This will be conducted by your teacher, but the external moderator will be present and may also ask you questions. PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS SKILLS These are the skills on which you will be tested in analysing performance. 1. Your knowledge of the rules of the game, including your ability to apply them as a player, referee, judge or other official. You will be tested on your knowledge of terminology used in the activity: ‘free shot’ in basketball, or the names of tactical formations in team games, ‘zone defence’. 2. You will be asked to observe and analyse a performance. 3. Then you will be expected to evaluate and measure the performance against what it should look like at its best. This is called knowledge of the perfect model. You will need to explain the perfect model and identify both strengths and weaknesses in your own and others performances. 4. During the activities you will learn about strategies, tactics and practices that can help to improve performance. You will have to show that you can plan these in your chosen activity. You will need to show your knowledge of training methods and how they can improve performance.
