GCSE Modern languages
This involves GCSE courses in French, German and Spanish.
The courses will be based upon the use of the foreign languages as an effective vehicle of communication.
Skills developed will include:
- Listening and Responding: students will learn to understand and answer questions mainly in the target language.
- Speaking: students will learn how to cope practically with real-life situations in the target language. They will also be capable of giving a presentation and participating in a discussion and general conversation.
- Reading and Responding: students will be able to understand and respond to material written in the foreign language.
- Writing: students will be able to carry out a variety of both factual and imaginative written tasks. Most pupils will do the coursework option, which will cut down the number of exam papers.

Students can be entered at either "Foundation" (Grades C-G) or "Higher" (Grades A*-D) level according to individual ability, in all four skill areas.
The material used in the syllabus will be of a practical and authentic nature. It will not only enable students to develop an awareness of the nature of language, but will also offer an insight into the exciting and unique cultures and civilisations of French, Spanish and German speaking countries. As a department, we ensure that all the students are challenged sufficiently to reach their full linguistic potential. This prepares those students who demonstrate an ability in foreign languages to be capable of succeeding in the AS and A2 courses.
GCSE Latin may be offered as a post 2.45pm option. This will be available to enthusiastic students who are capable of studying this extra GCSE.
