Recent News and Achievements
The History department is one of 60 in the country to be trialing the new GCSE History Pilot qualification. Most of the material for the course is written by teachers and the assessment tasks devised by them. Head of Department, Mr. Rogers, has written a teacher’s guide book which is published by Heinemann. Student results from the first year have been extremely promising.
The second year group taking the GCSE Pilot from September 2007 has been able to study on-line using the school’s learning platform. Working in collaboration with E-Learning Foundation, the department has developed a fully internet based version of the course. Students have leased laptops which they bring into school in order to access the materials. Results so far indicate that e-learning has been very successful. As a follow-on from this, Mr. Rogers and Mr. Nuttall have both led training courses for national organisations on e-learning in History.
The department is also involved with the Frameworks Working Group, a research organisation based at the Institute of Education in London. It is looking for a better way to teach History using temporal frameworks to improve students’ ability to see the ‘big picture’. This work has been funded by QCA and approved by Ofsted.
Following the prestigious national award, received by the History Department, for the best AS level results in 2005, results at both AS and A level have continued to be among the best in the country.
