OCR HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE (Double Award)
What is a GCSE in Health & Social Care? A GCSE in Health & Social Care is a nationally recognised work-related qualification designed to provide you with a choice of routes into further education or employment. It is made up of three units.
What is a Double Award?
A double award is a qualification equal to two GCSE’s. It is twice the size of most GCSE’s, so you will get 2 grades A*A*-GG.
What do I need to know or be able to do before taking the GCSE in Health and Social Care?
You do not need to have studied health or social care before starting the GCSE. It is important that you have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in health and social care, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively.

Who is the GCSE in Health & Social Care For?
This course will appeal to you if you:

The structure of the GCSE in Health and Social Care
Unit 1: Health, social care and early year’s provision
Unit 2: Promoting Health and Well-being
Unit 3: Understanding Personal Development and Relationships
Units 1 and 2 are assessed by coursework. Your unit 1 coursework will be based on work related placements. Your unit 2 coursework will be based on a producing a health plan for yourself or someone you know.
Only Unit 3 has an exam.
The Unit 3 exam is taken in the January of Year 11, so most students know what grade GCSE they have achieved before they finish Year 11. This means that you would also have the opportunity to re-sit the exam in June if you didn’t achieve the best grade you could.
To choose GCSE Health and Social Care:
Ideally you must agree to do a Health & Social Care related work placement in Year 10 e.g. at a nursery, playgroup, school, doctors surgery, residential care homes, youth settings etc
Students who gain at least one Level 7 and two Level 6 will be eligible for consideration for a FAST TRACK group.
This means they will cover the Double Award Scheme in the time allocated for a single option. This will allow students two other free option choices.
