ARE WE FORGETTING THE COUNTRYSIDE?

We’re always being told how children of today have forgotten the great outdoors, but how true is it?

This is the answer.

A beautiful view? Or something to forget?

For many years now, people have thought that children are forgetting how to play outside and imagine, due to the massive range of computerized games available to them. Having been brought up in a house where computer games and television are frowned upon, and going out of town is a near weekly thing, I felt well placed to find out what is happening.

When I asked around my school and my neighborhood, I was shocked to discover that the claims made are correct, many of my piers admitted that they did not go to ‘the countryside’ more than twice a year. When asked what they did instead, nearly all mentioned a games console of some kind.

With this in mind, I decided to investigate what is so fantastic about these consoles that every child seems to be besotted with. They have always seemed pretty uninteresting to me, however recently, my family bought a Nintendo Wii for Christmas, and it has changed my opinion. It is more active than the other current consoles, but the graphics are comparatively poor. It is one of many major consoles lusted after by many, including the Play Station 3, the Xbox 360 and many more.

Many adults believe the consoles to be a bad idea, however Mr. Harlow of Leeds commented ‘the Wii is a step in the right direction, but it is still vastly inferior to the human imagination’. This seems to be the opinion of many parents, as it is now one of Britain’s top consoles.

This leads me to my conclusion: all consoles are bad for your child’s imagination; however the Wii is more active. My main advice is to encourage your children to go out more, especially to the wonderful countryside that surrounds us but we seem to be gradually forgetting.
